Not even a year after Toyota released the joint FR-S/BRZ/GT86 sports car project with Subaru, rumors have started flying that the company has plans to begin work on another sports car in the near future. Many sources have gathered that Toyota wants to create two new sports cars to complete their offerings. One would most likely be based on the MR2 and positioned just below the Scion FR-S in terms of price and performance. The other could potentially become a reincarnation of the beloved Toyota Supra and would be positioned a good bit above the FR-S in terms of both performance and price.
Further solidifying the rumors for the Supra is news from Toyota senior execs that seems to suggest plans for collaboration with the American, electric car company, Tesla. This would also mean that the new Supra would most likely feature a fully electric drivetrain! Tesla’s design chief, Franz von Holzhausen has stated in the past that Tesla is looking to build a new sports car that would complete directly with the BMW 3 series… also, right in the realm of a new Supra.
You can look into this as much or as little as you like, but here at Cumberland Toyota, we like to think it means more awesome sports cars on the way!
