Toyota Hybrid to Race at 2012 Le Mans

Since the induction of the Toyota Prius, the knock against hybrid cars is their speed and power, or rather, the lack of. Toyota is hoping to challenge that mindset next year when they manufacturer’s racing arm, Toyota Motorsport GmbH or TMG, will race a gasoline-electric hybrid prototype at several FIA World Endurance Championship races, including the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

Toyota’s race car will be based on a chassis from the premier LMP1 class and will feature a powertrain built by Toyota in Japan. Further details on Toyota’s race plans and the name of the car will come as the dates move closer, but for now Toyota tells us that TMG’s technical center will be housed in Cologne, Germany.
